- A marine windlass is a large deck machinery used on vessels.
- It is designed to recover and release the anchor and anchor chain.
- It is normally installed on the main deck at the vessel’s stern.
- It is often used in combination with a mooring winch.
- A marine anchor windlass restrains and manipulates the anchor chain and/or rope.

Application of Marine Windlass
Marine windlasses are usually used to secure ships to prevent them from drifting or being exposed to other dangers in harsh sea conditions. Windlass can be used in ports, bays, rivers, and other water areas. Windlasses can also be used for anchoring other equipment, such as oil well platforms, offshore wind turbines, and so on.

Marine windlass consists of a base, bracket, gypsy wheel, brake, chain wheel, gearbox, electrical control system( except for manual windlass), etc. Electric windlass has a motor with it and the hydraulic windlass has a hydraulic pump station. The windlass is chosen according to the vessel, dimension of the anchor & anchor chain.
